About Us

The mandate of the Ondangwa town council is to govern and administer the local authority affairs within the proclaimed local authority area of Ondangwa subject to legislation.

Mission
To govern and administer local affairs of the inhabitants of Ondangwa town through planning coordination, and partnership in the delivery of urban services towards socio-economic development and improved quality of life
Vision
To become an engine of sustainable development

Population
Ondangwa as a town has a population of over 32 000 people, which is about 20% of the population of Oshana Region. The regions has a high rural setup and therefore the figure of the town’s population became somehow deceiving when planning for investment purposes as most of the rural population around the Ondangwa area depends on Ondangwa Town for shopping and other needs.

Location
Ondangwa is centrally located between Oshana and Oshikoto situated 60 km from the Angolan border along the B1 road. And is a gateway to Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto and the rest of Oshana regions.

History
Ondangwa, the oldest town in the region, dates back to the 1800 century as a trading centre in the North and the first settlement of the missionaries.
Ondangwa means "the end of the Ondonga kingdoms area.

Ondangwa current status
Several Government offices are housed here as well as the Onandjokwe State Hospital at Oniipa.
A range of local and regional business includes food, clothes, furniture, building equipment, car repair, banks, post office, pharmacies, private doctors.

Here you find school ranging from primary to secondary among them is the Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Senior Secondary School. Rössing Foundation, Kayec and Cosdec are the three vocational skills schools training young people in building maintenance, sewing, cooking, IT etc.

Departments

Office of the Chief Executive
The office putting in place a system that ensures efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of services by adoption of a system of checks and balances and involvement of all stakeholders in the governance process.
Department of Environment and Health
The department is responsible on creating healthy communities, encouraging social development as well as ensuring a sustainable environment development among the residents
Department of Marketing, Economic Development
The Department is focusing on social and economic development of the inhabitants, through marketing and promoting local economic development and tourism to the town, as well building and establishing a working relationship with all stakeholders and ensure their involvement in the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects and programmes.
Department of Technical Services
This department is responsible with all Councils’ technical issues namely, Town planning Water and Sanitation, Roads and Storm water, as well Electricity building maintenance.
Department of Human Resources and Administration
The department is responsible planning human resource while managing performance and ensuring effectiveness within the organization.
Department of Finance
This Department is responsible of putting in place a system that ensures efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of service, while controlling the budget and promoting ICT infrastructure.
